Meet Carmen
I took my first solo trip to Spain at 19. And, honestly, I hated it at first! Being far from friends and in an unfamiliar setting was unsettling. My once-small world had cracked open. And that crack brought chaos. I was stranded by taxi strikes, lost my luggage, and had to fend off creepy guys — all in a foreign language!
But after falling down a few (dozen) times, I finally got the rhythm of traveling alone as a woman. I cultivated my own set of guidelines: little rules for myself and research I would do before traveling somewhere new. I began to trust my intuition. With that newfound confidence, my world expanded with a bang! Suddenly, there were endless places to explore and people to meet. While studying abroad in Buenos Aires, I traveled South America by myself for a year.
After graduating from NYU, I started a job in global affairs. There, I wrote safety reports for business travelers of fortune 500 companies. I created emergency evacuation plans, studied hotel safety procedures and recommend safe travel routes for C-suite executives. It was fascinating. But I started to outgrow the job. In my heart, I knew the information would better serve solo female travelers than corporate America.
So like coming home, I am traveling Latin America and the Caribbean alone for a year. But this time, I am taking you with me. Check out the safety guides where I share my personal safety tips for the region!
